I'm not just writing a positive review here, but a general one. The boat was easy to find, but it certainly wasn't a 40 minute round trip and we had to get off at a station which we didn't want to do. Then we went on the way home (London Eye Pier) and one stop before that the boat was probably broken and everyone had to get off. At this stop, the guests who were already on board were only told that we should get a new ticket (there was a meter-long queue), although we had a ticket and we got it in advance to avoid these queues. We then went downstairs and nobody said anything. In the end we took the Undergroud back to the London eye because we were already 20 minutes over our timeslot. Luckily we got into the London eye and didn't have to queue, but we were really unlucky with the group inside the eye because they were children who couldn't behave at all and kicked the windows etc. However, this had nothing to do with the ticket from Handout. As a tip, if you book it, allow at least 3 hours between the boat and the eye in case something comes up. It was still nice and you got a perfect impression of London on the first day.

Good price and timing for the combo package. We liked the offer of free cancellation 24h before the event in case of bad weather. Lucky for was it was not the case. The 10:00 boat was very nice as we had live presentation of the main sites along the Thames river. However we didn't realize at the moment of the booking, that the boat cruise was actually a one way cruise. It started at London Eye and ended at the Tower bridge. So we had to run back to London Eye for our next appointment at 11:15. Obviously we missed the appointment and the line grew considerably till we entered the London Eye. But , at the end the weather was gorgeous so we were happy.

Booking ahead with Headout was worry-free and ensured we got in line for the cruise promptly. While we booked a return trip, it was the journey down the river that we enjoyed most. It was really good time on boat, you could sing inside or outside depending on weather conditions, inside were a lot windows so you could see the view very good. But the best was a man who guided us, tell us funny and also many interesting stories about the buildings we actually see. He was proffesional and funny. It was way batter than the recording. I highly recommend the Thames Sighseeing Criuse. My trip was from Westminster to Greenwich. It took around an hour. The speed of the bout was ideal not so fast so you could realy enjoy the view. Than I went back to city by regular bus.

The guy commentating had a great sense of humour with some good one liners i.e. the beach/research . TBH I definitely would prefer this than the pre recorded commentary, be aware he advised passengers to get the APP to listen to commentary and also in different languages. The boat was clean and very smooth sailing, loads of space on our trip. The only reason I didn't give it 5* was the cost of the drinks but it was my choice whether to pay it or not I suppose. We absolutely loved this experience. The bus stops were very conveniently located and the buses came quite often. There was a lovely audio tour on the bus and free headphones to listen with. The tour gave lots of interesting facts about the sights we were passing. The tour guides were pleasant and careful drivers. We will definitely use the company again when we return to London!

Let me start by saying the Tower of London was brilliant if we had just done that tge experience would have got top marks. But the hop on hop off with Toot was bloody awful and I actually want my money back. The whole point of a tour bus is to learn about the area but their audio mussed so much out and was more interested in telling us pointless stiries about a couple kssing under a bridge, about a guy going to the Imax to see a movue about the artic circle. I couldnt care less about these stories.

reviewer
DebbieJun, 2025

The buses weren't as frequent as I thought they were to be. I would have preferred a paper ticket as my phone battery dropped off quickly during the day thereby making it difficult to access the online ticket to show the driver. The traffic congestion was unbelievable and on a couple of occasions I got off the bus and walked as it was much quicker. Obviously Tootbus doesn't have any control on the traffic issues.

Access to the tower worked without any problems and without any significant waiting time, as we were there on time for the opening. The Tootbus service was OK, but the other providers were more frequent. The flow of information at Tootbus was not optimal. Nevertheless, we had a great day.

HoponHopoff, it was very nice. We didn't just do one route because you see something different on each one from the bus. You drive right past the sights. The theme boat trip was also wonderful. Tower, you need some time here, we were there for 3 hours and didn't manage to see everything.

It would be better if you had a human guide pointing out what you were talking about. On a crowded bus it was hard to tell which building the guide was talking about or even where in the route where you were. No one announcing or display of what stop you were at so you could keep up.

The experience with the bus was very good. Not so much with the cruise that was included.... According to the indications that came in the reservation the cruise departed and arrived at the same destination. Due to the extreme traffic the three hours turned into five which included an unexpected 1/2 hour stop to change drivers. River cruise was a different perspective of the city by water. The guide was funny on the water cruise. Tower of London was the 2nd day for us. We stayed about 3 hrs and did the guided audio tour. We really enjoyed it. Always nice to find deals on vacation to save a buck or two.

As the Tower and Tower Bridge are close together, a morning and afternoon combination of the two sights is a good idea. We had planned 2 hours for the Tower with two children (aged 7 and 10), which was adequate. We spent the whole afternoon at the Tower. Especially in Tower Bridge, the tour through the museum and the engine room is very entertaining for the children with an accompanying activity.

The tickets were easy to purchase, we chose a dual ticket option with a reduction for seniors. At both places, the staff was very flexible allowing us to enter early. 2 to 3 hours in the Tower is required as there is so much to see.

Would go again. My grandson loved it.

Thames River tour was awesome! Excellent tour hosts who provide a wonderful description of what you are seeing. Big Bus tour was good but there are many many more buses from other tour companies that pick up passengers while we waited for the Big Bus. We got off at one stop and had to wait one hour for a Big Bus tour bus to come back to pick us up. This prevented us from getting off at stops in the city as we were concerned that we would not be picked up and would not see the remainder of the blue or red route. We thought we had the evening tour included but our tickets printed "does not include night tour".

Ricer trip was great & crew superb, wonderful commentary The Big Bus tour had lots of off route time due to so many toad works around the Museum area & did not go past Buckingham Palace due to road works. At Tower Bridge there were no busses for more than 1/2 hour - staff said all the buses were bunched together. When the bus arrived it was too full to get on so we waited another 10 minutes for the next bus. Meanwhile loads of the other competitors busses went past. It's a lot of money to not provide a regular service, would not recommend Big Bus & would try another company next time

The exhibition is beautifully designed and extremely informative. There is a passport for children on which they can collect stamps. A small cat guides you through the exhibition, which is present everywhere but not at all distracting. The pictures and information in the exhibition are wonderfully presented and you have a really great feeling of being right in the middle of the construction of the bridge. There is a glass floor at the top of the transverse corridor, I didn't dare to go up there at first, but you also have a great view from up there.

We first visited the Tower with the Crown Jewels. We saw everything in 4 hours and it was a great experience. The highlight was then the London Eye. We treated ourselves to Fast Track and that was really great as we could walk through to the gondola without having to wait. A great day.

It was important to arrive early enough to get in on time, as already mentioned on the tickets. Both the Tower and Tower Bridge were very interesting You should allow 3 hours for the Tower tour in particular

The tickets were easy to purchase, we chose a dual ticket option with a reduction for seniors. At both places, the staff was very flexible allowing us to enter early. 2 to 3 hours in the Tower is required as there is so much to see. The audio guide is very worthwhile, Beefeater guide attracts large number. Our trip to Tower Bridge was fascinating, worth visiting the engine room, very interesting.

I recommend it with my eyes closed. Discovery of London by coach and little cruise on the Thames. Simply magnificent tour of London. Tickets in the form of QR codes sent upon purchase. No problems at the various checkpoints. I'll be using Headout again for my next trips.

I liked everything, however at the time of booking you should make more emphasis on the fact that the hop-on hop-off Bus Tour company is Tootbus.

It would be better if you had a human guide pointing out what you were talking about. On a crowded bus it was hard to tell which building the guide was talking about or even where in the route where you were. No one announcing or display of what stop you were at so you could keep up.

The bus and the commentary were generally very good. However, compared to other hop on/hop off buses, the buses arrived infrequently and very irregularly.

The price was great. We saw the whole of blue line which was 3 1/2 hrs. Great view of the city and short spurts of history thru headphones. River cruise was a different perspective of the city by water. The guide was funny on the water cruise. Tower of London was the 2nd day for us. We stayed about 3 hrs and did the guided audio tour. We really enjoyed it. Always nice to find deals on vacation to save a buck or two.

Tips to choose your Thames River cruise

  • Types of cruises: Thames Cruises has something for everyone! Take an hour-long sightseeing cruise to see the landmarks or enjoy the flexibility of a hop-on-hop-off Uber Boat. If romance is your vibe, an evening cruise with live music is the way to go!
  • Sightseeing vs meal cruises: A sightseeing or a meal cruise - wondering which suits you the best? The former is ideal for a brief overview of London’s highlights, with frequent 30-min departures. On the other hand, meal cruises offer a more extended, leisurely experience, combining sightseeing with dining, perfect for celebrations or a relaxing outing.
  • Round-trip cruises: If you're doing a round-trip cruise, keep track of the schedule, especially if you plan to get off and explore.
  • HOHO cruises: If you have a packed schedule or want more freedom, opt for a flexible or HOHO Uber Boat ticket. It allows you to board at any time on your chosen date, making it easier to fit into your plans without worrying about strict timings. With Uber Boats' Hop-on-Hop-off cruise, you can stop at any of the 24 piers, visit the nearby attractions on foot, and reboard at your convenience.
  • Best time to go on a cruise: The time you pick for your cruise really impacts the vibe! Mornings are calm and peaceful, while afternoons have all the action and better sightseeing views. Evenings promise mesmerizing sunset views and a dazzling skyline as the city lights come to life. Cruises can get busy, especially during peak tourist seasons, so try to go early in the morning or later in the evening for a quieter experience.
  • Accessibility: If you need wheelchair access, the Uber Boat by Thames Clippers is a top option. Most piers are step-free and accessible, but note that Cadogan, London Bridge City, and Wandsworth Riverside Quarter piers are exceptions. Check accessibility details before you book.

Going on a Thames cruise? Here's all you need to know

London Eye, Thames River Cruise
  • For sightseeing: If you want to get the best views of the London landmarks, then aim for a cruise during the daytime, ideally between 10am and 4pm. This will give you plenty of sunlight for capturing photos.
  • For a romantic experience: An evening cruise (around sunset) can be very romantic, especially if you choose a dinner cruise with a 4-course meal and a scenic view.
  • Which months are the best: It all depends on your mood! Spring (March to May) brings mild weather and fewer crowds, especially in April and May. Summer (June to August) is lively but tourist-heavy. Early autumn (September) offers vibrant fall colors with fewer visitors. Winter (December to February) is quieter and budget-friendly, though chilly with shorter days.
  • What time of the day is best: A 10am-11am morning cruise is the best option for early birds. It gives you a calm, fresh start before the crowds hit, ideal for quiet sightseeing. On the other hand, late afternoon cruises offer the best of both worlds—daylight fading into a magical evening skyline.
Canary Wharf Pier, London
  • Westminster Pier: Accessible by metro. Take the Circle, District, or Jubilee line to Westminster Station. It's a short two-minute walk from the station to the pier.
  • Tower Pier: The closest subway station is Tower Hill, a four-minute walk to the boarding point. Metro lines - Circle and District - will bring you here.
  • London Eye Pier: The nearby metro station is Waterloo Station, accessible by the Jubilee line.
  • Greenwich Pier: Accessible by the Docklands Light Railway (DLR). Alight at Cutty Sark for Maritime Greenwich Station, a short walk to the pier.
Evening Cruise on the Thames, London
  • Evening cruise: This cruise treats you to a tasty lineup of cold canapés, perfectly paired with a refreshing beverage or non-alcoholic soft drink if you prefer.
  • Lunch cruise: Veggie fans, cassoulet's calling your name! This traditional French dish features a hearty mix of foraged oyster mushrooms and white beans, topped with a crispy herb and Parmesan crust. Meat lovers, don’t miss out on the roasted chicken—it’s delicious! And for dessert, indulge in a slice of zesty lemon gâteau for a perfect finish.
  • Afternoon cruise with tea: Relax with a tasty spread on board—cheddar ploughman, egg and cress, smoked salmon, and more! Oh, and don't miss the scones with clotted cream and a pot of your favorite tea. Fancy, huh?

thames river cruise
  • Wear layers: London weather loves to keep you guessing, so layer up! Dressing in layers lets you quickly adapt to shifting temperatures, especially if you're on an open deck where it can get chilly. So, pack a light jacket or raincoat, especially for evening cruises or if rain's on the horizon.
  • Accessories: If you're cruising during the day, remember to take sunglasses and a hat. They'll keep you shaded from the sun while you soak up those stunning deck views!
  • Footwear: You'll likely be walking to and from the pier and exploring nearby spots, so sneakers or casual flats will keep you comfy all day long.
  • Dress code for dining cruises: For a dinner cruise, wear smart casual attire. For women, wear stylish pants or a chic dress, and for men, wear collared shirts with trousers.
No Smoking sign
  • Life jackets: Life jackets are provided and must be worn if instructed. Crew members will brief you on safety procedures before departure.
  • Smoking: Most cruises have a no-smoking policy indoors, including cabins and enclosed areas. Smoking might be allowed on designated outdoor decks, so check signage.
  • Waste disposal: Bins are provided for waste disposal. Help maintain the cleanliness of the boat by disposing of rubbish responsibly.
  • Age restrictions: Children aged 13 and under are not allowed on the evening and dinner cruises.
  • Food and drinks: Outside food and drinks are also not allowed.
  • Bag policy: Luggage is generally not permitted on the cruises unless otherwise specified. It's best to check with the cruise provider for any restrictions before boarding.

Visitor tips

  • Choosing your pier: Choose your pier wisely on the hop-on-hop-off route. Greenwich Pier gives you a taste of maritime history, while Westminster Pier places you close to Big Ben. Check out nearby spots for a pre-cruise bite!
  • Check your pier’s bank side: Double-check which side of the pier you’re boarding from, as crossing the river to the opposite side can delay your journey and be confusing.
  • Boarding time: Arrive at the boarding point at least 15 minutes before departure. This gives you time to check in smoothly and snag a great seat on the boat.
  • Where to sit: Seating on Thames River cruises may differ. For sightseeing cruises, seats are usually first-come, first-serve, so you pick your spot when you board. Seats might be pre-assigned in advance for dining or special events. Check with your cruise provider for details! Weather permitting, find a seat on the upper deck or outdoors. It's the ideal spot to take in breathtaking views of London's landmarks as you sail down the river. Be aware that it can get windy, so be prepared.
  • Photography: The Thames River offers fantastic photo ops with iconic backdrops like Tower Bridge and the London Eye. So, ensure your devices are fully charged before the cruise, and consider bringing a portable charger.
