Things to know before booking a Thames River dining cruise

  • Menu formats and course structure: The Thames River dining cruises offer distinct meal styles. Dinner cruises feature a three or four-course meal, while the lunch cruise offers a two-course meal. The shorter Afternoon Tea cruise serves a selection of finger sandwiches, pastries, and scones, and the evening cruise with canapés provides a cold canapé selection instead of a full meal. All are set menus.
  • Dietary requirements and allergies: Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are generally available on the Thames dinner cruises and the lunch cruise, but must be requested at the time of booking. Importantly, the evening cruise with canapés cannot cater to any dietary requirements other than standard non-vegetarian and vegetarian canapés. Please inform the operator of any allergies when booking, though they cannot guarantee that any food item is completely 'free from' traces of allergens due to preparation environments.
  • Cruise duration and timings: The Thames River dinner cruise typically lasts approximately 3 hours, offering ample time to enjoy the views and entertainment. The evening cruise with canapés is a shorter 2-hour experience. The lunch cruise is about 1 hour 45 mins, and the Afternoon Tea cruise is 90 mins. Boarding is usually 15-20 mins before the scheduled departure.
  • Seating arrangements and window seats: Seating on all dining cruises is pre-allocated, and tables are fixed to the floor. While tables are positioned to maximise views through panoramic windows, standard seating may place you in close proximity to other diners.
  • Entertainment: The evening cruises feature entertainment: the Thames dinner cruises include a live performer and music for dancing until late. The evening cruise with canapés also includes live music. Daytime cruises (lunch cruise and Afternoon Tea cruise) do not offer live entertainment.
  • Upgrades and additional drinks: A welcome drink (usually sparkling wine or a non-alcoholic option) is included with all Thames River dining cruise types. Additional beverages, including alcoholic drinks, are not included but can be purchased from the licensed onboard bar.

How to choose your boarding point

When booking your Thames River dining cruise, choose the pier that is most convenient for your accommodation or other sightseeing plans. Westminster Pier is best for the West End/Southbank, while Tower Pier suits visitors near the City of London.

Plan your Thames River dining cruise

Tips & guidelines

  • Early booking for prime views: The popular options sell out 2–3 weeks in advance during peak season. To guarantee your preferred seating or secure a premium window table, book your chosen service as early as possible, particularly for weekend dates.
  • Maximise your photo opportunities: For unobstructed views, the outdoor upper deck is the ideal spot. Inside, the boat continuously turns on its route, meaning you will capture views of major landmarks on both the North and South banks, so just enjoy the moment as you pass.
  • Dress code: While the lunch and Afternoon Tea cruises are relaxed, the dinner or evening cruise calls for smart casual or elegant dress. Avoid trainers and ripped jeans. Elevating your outfit slightly ensures you match the sophisticated atmosphere and look great in all your cityscape photos.
  • Pre-cruise dietary notification: Given the structured, set menus served on the cruises, it is essential to inform the operator of any serious dietary restrictions, allergies, or needs (like vegan or gluten-free) at least 48 hours prior to your Thames River dining cruise departure to ensure you are safely catered for.
  • Onboard costs and tipping: Expect most onboard bar purchases, such as wine, beer, or cocktails, to be charged separately from your package, even on a full dinner cruise. While not mandatory, tips are greatly appreciated for excellent table service provided by the crew during your meal.
